As a result of a chain of technical failures of old equipment already scheduled for replacement, there are currently certain limitations in the services provided to members of the CAcert community. We regret this terribly.

Mid september, we discovered that a partition contained a corrupt file system. A
subsequent hardware test showed that one of the hard drives was reporting hardware errors. In order to be able to continue using the system, we have moved this partition to a second drive.

Since the end of september the system no longer responds. We suspect that other partitions are defective. Neither web access nor SSH access work, so the only way to find the error can only be analysed in more detail by a visit to our data centre.
In order to still be able to offer as many services as possible to the CAcert community until the repair, we redirected the connections for www.cacert.org and secure.cacert.org in the incoming firewall to the second system. As a result of ongoing hardware renewal, however, this fall-back level is not quite complete: There is no working signer and no up-to-date copy of the CAcert database attached to this system.

That is, why the main page can be used as a start for informing our users about the blog for now, while certificate issuing and WoT access has to be postponed until our technical volunteers have made the several-hour trip to the data centre for troubleshooting. As they are doing this in their spare time and at their own expense, we are very grateful to these volunteers that they will probably be able to do this in mid-October.

L’accès au Signer et à la base de données est impossible jusqu’à une intervention sur place dans le centre de calcul à l’étranger, probablement mi-octobre. Nous le regrettons vivement. O acesso ao signatário e ao banco de dados não será possível até uma visita no local ao centro de dados no exterior, provavelmente em meados de outubro. Lamentamos muito o ocorrido. Nuestros voluntarios técnicos ya han tomado todas las medidas de mantenimiento a distancia. El acceso al firmante y a la base de datos no será posible hasta una visita in situ al centro de datos en el extranjero, probablemente a mediados de octubre. Lo lamentamos mucho. Committee of CAcert Inc association is complete again. Picture shows the good old time in New South Wales.

There are some good news: The committee of CAcert Inc, the association behind our community, is again complete (picture: before the relocation to Europe). We welcome Michael R from Canada as the new treasurer. He takes over from Frédéric G from France who ran the treasury during a difficult period when Paypal cut us off from our money for months. We thank Frédéric G for his work in the past and look forward to working with Michael.

Newly, several people are taking care of the finances with the finance team. Besides the treasurer, the finance team includes Waclaw from Poland and Frédéric D. On the one hand, the finance team will replace our outdated accounting software. It also wants to unify the structures that have grown over the years. Thirdly, it will support the Board with subsidy applications.

Deutsch Der Trägerverein CAcert Inc hat einen neuen Kassier. Dieser wird in seinen Aufgaben durch das Finanzteam unterstützt. Erste Aufgaben werden sein, unsere veraltete Buchhaltungssoftware zu ersetzen. Ausserdem sollen die über die Jahren gewachsenen Strukturen verschlankt und der Vorstand bei Subventionsgesuchen unterstützt werden.

Les premières tâches consisteront à remplacer notre logiciel de comptabilité obsolète. Come è noto, CAcert, come organizzazione internazionale per la sicurezza su Internet, si è trasferita dal Nuovo Galles del Sud a Ginevra, Svizzera, alla fine dello scorso anno. Re-signed Class-3-Certificate – take action now!

English | We already reported here in January that our Class 3 certificate is being re-signed. This was done a few weeks ago in our data centre in the Netherlands and subsequently tested extensively by our volunteers.

The new Class 3 certificate can now be downloaded here. In some days we will update the fingerprints and publish the other formats here. We recommend that all users use the new Class 3 certificate immediately, as the old certificate is approaching its expiry date and will no longer be valid after May 20th. Download the new certificate today and install it in your browser, e-mail program or certificate server as required.

All this exciting work (planning, re-signing, testing, communication) was done by volunteers from the CAcert community. They have acquired a lot of expertise over time and have worked their way up in the community. CAcert continues to offer such opportunities to interested and committed people today.

Alles neu macht der Mai – Neuerungen bei CAcert

Deutsch | Wir haben bereits im Januar an dieser Stelle darüber berichtet, dass unser Class-3-Zertifikat neu signiert wird. Dies ist vor einigen Wochen in unserem Rechenzentrum in den Niederlanden geschehen und anschliessend ausführlich von unseren Freiwilligen getestet worden.

Das neue Class-3-Zertifiat kann jetzt hier heruntergeladen werden. In wenigen Tagen werden wir die Fingerprints als auch die anderen Formate hier an gewohnter Stelle veröffentlichen. Wir empfehlen allen Nutzern, ab sofort das neue Class-3-Zertifikat zu verwenden, da das alte Zertifikate seinen Ablaufdatum entgegenschreitet und dann nicht mehr gültig ist. Laden Sie heute noch das neue Zertifikat herunter und installieren Sie es je nach Bedarf in Ihrem Browser, e-Mailprogramm oder Zertifikatsserver.

Alle diese spannenden Arbeiten (Planung, neu signieren, testen, Kommunikation) wurden von Freiwilligen der CAcert-Gemeinschaft erledigt. New Class 3 certificate expected for May

Question of a member of the community: The Class3 certificate is set to expire this year in May. What do I need to do with:
a) My existing certificates that were signed against the Class 3
b) Installation of the new Class3 and when will that happen?

Answer from our volunteer critical system administrator: Thank you for this question. We started the resigning procedure already last year. We plan to use the same private key for the new class-3-certificate, so the old certificates will remain valid.

As the resigning needs to be done in the data centre in the Netherlands, this is planned for February/March – depending on the pandemic situation. So there will be enough time to replace the Class-3-Root in your configuration (Certificate-Chain) or your Browsers.

Deutsch: Die Planung, um das Class-3-Zertifikat neu zu signieren wurden bereits im letzten Jahr aufgenommen. Der Zeitplan ist grosszügig, dass die Arbeiten unserer Freiwilligen vor Mai abgeschlossen sein werden.

Français: Le projet de re-signer le certificat de la classe 3 a été lancé l’année dernière. Le calendrier est généreux, le travail de nos volontaires sera terminé avant le mois de mai.

Un nuevo año con CAcert

El gobierno puede prohibir los fuegos artificiales, las estrellas seguirán brillando y el año nuevo llegará igual.

En pocas horas, comenzará un nuevo año. El año 2020 fue difícil para muchos de nosotros, algunas cosas en la comunidad sólo fueron posibles con dificultad o no fueron posibles en absoluto. Afortunadamente, en CAcert las distancias suelen ser lo suficientemente grandes y también una garantía con una mascarilla facial es inofensiva para la salud.

Para que el nuevo año sea mejor en todos los aspectos, es importante que pongamos nuestros objetivos por escrito. DEUTSCH Die meisten Dienstleis-tungen von CAcert unterliegen nicht den behördlichen Pandemie-Ein-schränkungen. Support und Zerti-fikatsausstellung werden weiterhin rund um die Uhr angeboten, die gesetzlichen Mindestabstände bei weitem eingehalten.

Bei einer Assurance sind normalerweise weniger als 5 Personen anwesend und sich nur für kurze (weniger als 15 min) Zeit treffen. Wir empfehlen zu Beginn und am Ende die Hände mindestens 30s lang einzuseifen und während der ganzen Assurance eine Maske zu tragen. Wenn möglich soll eine Assurance in Freien stattfinden.

FRANÇAIS La plupart des services de CAcert ne sont pas soumis à des restrictions réglementaires en cas de pandémie. L’assistance et la délivrance de certificats continuent d’être offertes 24 heures sur 24, et les distances minimales légales sont de loin respectées.

Lors d’une accréditation, moins de 5 personnes sont généralement présentes et ne se rencontrent que pour une courte durée (moins de 15 minutes). Nous recommandons de se savonner les mains pendant au moins 30 secondes au début et à la fin et de porter un masque pendant toute la durée de l’accréditation. Si possible, une accréditation doit avoir lieu à l’extérieur.

ITALIANO La maggior parte dei servizi di CAcert non sono soggetti a restrizioni normative in caso di pandemia. Il supporto e l’emissione di certificati continuano ad essere offerti 24 ore su 24 e le distanze minime legali sono di gran lunga rispettate.

ENGLISH Most of CAcert’s services are not subject to the official pandemic restrictions. Support and certificate issuance continue to be offered around the clock, and the legal minimum distances are by far adhered to.

During an assurance, usually less than 5 people are present and meet for a short (less than 15 min) time. We recommend soaping hands for at least 30s at the beginning and end and wearing a mask throughout the assurance. If possible, an assurance should take place outdoors.

ESPAGÑOL La mayoría de los servicios de CAcert no están sujetos a restricciones reglamentarias en caso de pandemia. Se sigue ofreciendo apoyo y emisión de certificados las 24 horas del día, y se respetan con mucho las distancias mínimas legales.

Durante una aseguración, normalmente están presentes menos de 5 personas y sólo se reúnen durante un corto tiempo (menos de 15 minutos).
