There are some good news: The committee of CAcert Inc, the association behind our community, is again complete (picture: before the relocation to Europe). We welcome Michael R from Canada as the new treasurer. He takes over from Frédéric G from France who ran the treasury during a difficult period when Paypal cut us off from our money for months. We thank Frédéric G for his work in the past and look forward to working with Michael.
Newly, several people are taking care of the finances with the finance team. Besides the treasurer, the finance team includes Waclaw from Poland and Frédéric D. On the one hand, the finance team will replace our outdated accounting software. It also wants to unify the structures that have grown over the years. Thirdly, it will support the Board with subsidy applications.

We recently reported here about a signer malfunction in our data centre in the Netherlands. Usually, our systems are redundant for such cases. This spring, the second disk was removed for repair due to an other malfunction that could not be resolved remotely. A small team of our volunteer engineers is working flat out to rebuild the server locally in Germany.
Then it can be brought to the data centre on the following Friday. If everything goes according to plan by Wednesday, the server in the Netherlands can go online on Friday.
CAcert is run exclusively by volunteers in their spare time. If you would like to help out in one way or another, we recommend subscribing to the relevant mailing lists to get in touch with the current topics and the active players.
Arbeit an neuem Signer läuft auf Hochtouren
Wir haben vor kurzem hier über eine Störung des Signers in unserem Datenzentrum in den Niederlanden berichtet. Üblicherweise sind für solche Fälle unsere Systeme redundant ausgerichtet. In diesem Frühjahr wurde die zweite Platte wegen einer anderen Störung, die sich nur per Fernwartung lösen konnte zur Reparatur entfernt.
Ein kleines Team unserer freiwilligen Ingenieure arbeitet mit Hochdruck daran, den Server lokal in Deutschland nachzubauen. Daraufhin kann er am darauffolgenden Freitag ins Rechenzentrum gebracht werden. Sollte alles bis Mittwoch nach Plan laufen, kann der Server in den Niederlanden am Freitag ins Netz gehen.
CAcert wird ausschliesslich von Freiwilligen in Ihrer Freizeit betrieben. Wenn Sie auf die eine oder andere Art mithelfen möchten, empfehlen wir, die entsprechenden Mailinglisten zu abonnieren, um so mit den aktuellen Themenkreisen und den aktiven Akteuren in Kontakt zu kommen.

Of course, CAcert is first and foremost a virtual organisation. But the supporting association has its headquarters at a real address. An on-site intervention in our datacentre will take place not later than Friday, June 18. The purpose of this intervention is to correct a defect on one of our network equipment, which lowers the redundancy of our infrastructure.

Travaux planifiés à Ede. Une intervention sur site dans notre datacenter aura lieu le plustard le vendredi 18 juin. Elle a pour but de corriger un défaut sur un de nos équipements réseau, qui abaisse la redondance de notre infrastructure. Simultanément, elle devrait permettre de diagnostiquer et nous l’espérons résoudre sans délai, un problème de transmission entre notre signer et le reste de l’infrastructure. D’ici le 18 juin, nos membres ne seront plus capables de renouveler leurs certificats, ni de rendre publique la révocation de leurs certificats si nécessaire.

Dringende Unterhaltsarbeiten Ein Vor-Ort-Einsatz in unserem Rechenzentrum findet spätestens am Freitag, 18. Juni, statt. English | We already reported here in January that our Class 3 certificate is being re-signed. This was done a few weeks ago in our data centre in the Netherlands and subsequently tested extensively by our volunteers.
The new Class 3 certificate can now be downloaded here. In some days we will update the fingerprints and publish the other formats here. We recommend that all users use the new Class 3 certificate immediately, as the old certificate is approaching its expiry date and will no longer be valid after May 20th. Download the new certificate today and install it in your browser, e-mail program or certificate server as required.
All this exciting work (planning, re-signing, testing, communication) was done by volunteers from the CAcert community. They have acquired a lot of expertise over time and have worked their way up in the community. CAcert continues to offer such opportunities to interested and committed people today.
Alles neu macht der Mai – Neuerungen bei CAcert

Question of a member of the community: The Class3 certificate is set to expire this year in May. What do I need to do with: a) My existing certificates that were signed against the Class 3 b) Installation of the new Class3 and when will that happen?
Answer from our volunteer critical system administrator: Thank you for this question. We started the resigning procedure already last year. We plan to use the same private key for the new class-3-certificate, so the old certificates will remain valid.
As the resigning needs to be done in the data centre in the Netherlands, this is planned for February/March – depending on the pandemic situation. So there will be enough time to replace the Class-3-Root in your configuration (Certificate-Chain) or your Browsers.

In wenigen Stunden beginnt ein neues Jahr. 2020 war für viele von uns schwierig, manches in der Gemeinschaft war nur erschwert oder gar nicht möglich. Bei CAcert sind glücklicherweise die Abstände normalerweise genügend gross und auch eine Assurance mit einer Gesichtsmaske ist gesundheitlich unbedenklich.
Damit das neue Jahr in allen Belangen ein besseres Jahr wird, ist es wichtig, dass wir unsere Ziele schriftlich festhalten. Am einfachsten gelingt das mit diesem Blatt: ausdrucken, ausfüllen, gut sichtbar aufhängen. Lieber kleine Ziele, die erreichbar sind oder nur ein Ziel. Wenn dieses schon bald erreicht ist, kann man sich ja ein neues Ziel setzen auf der Zeile darunter. Viel Erfolg!
The word “Advent” is Latin and means “arrival”. In the church, Advent is the time of waiting for Christmas. For four weeks. In darkness. But then it gets light. The Christmas season from Christmas Eve to Epiphany: candles, fine food, angels singing, beautiful music, presents.
If we transfer this to CAcert, CAcert is also in a kind of Advent season: it has been going on for a while and will continue for a while longer. It is dark, but we hope for something better. “The people in darkness await the coming of the light.” CAcert activists have been setting a new course for various things over the past few years. We see light at the end of the tunnel. But again, workers are few and work is many.

Doch dann wird es hell. Die Weihnachtszeit von Heilig Abend bis Dreikönigstag: Kerzen, feines Essen, Engelsgesang, schöne Musik, Geschenke.
Wenn wir dies auf CAcert übertragen, befindet sich CAcert auch in einer Art Adventszeit: Sie dauert schon eine Weile und wird noch etwas weiter andauern. Es ist dunkel, aber wir hoffen auf etwas besseres. “Das Volk im Dunkeln wartet auf die Ankunft des Lichts.” Die Aktiven von CAcert haben in den vergangenen Jahren verschiedene Weichen neu gestellt. Wir sehen Licht am Ende des Tunnels. Aber auch hier gilt: Der Arbeiter sind wenige und Arbeit viel.
Deshalb lancieren wir am heutigen vierten Adventssonntag einenn Appell an alle: Komm zu uns. Mach mit. Hilf irgendwo. Eine halbe Stunde hier oder eine Stunde dort. Geht das einmal wöchentlich? Du und ich, wir alle zusammen kommen gemeinsam schneller ans Ziel! Im Moment stehen zwei wichtige Arbeiten an. Auch hier ist eine kleine Gruppe aktiv am Forschen und evaluiert erste Möglichkeiten. Anschliessend haben wir zzwei Projekte in der Pipeline zum Ausrollen, mit denen CAcert in die Fläche geht und auch die finanzielle Situation nachhaltig verbessern kann.

We at CAcert are well positioned in the current special circumstances in almost all cases. For us, home office is everyday life and the usual distances between our volunteers at work are not measured in centimetres or metres, but in kilometres.
Today, the third Sunday of Advent, we introduce the new support. At the moment, we are in the process of significantly expanding the support service. Currently, new volunteers are being trained and are helping to ensure that enquiries can be processed more quickly. In Cologne they are called Heinzelmännchen, in Sweden they are called Tomte – no matter what you want to call these people who help you in their spare time at CAcert, they are located in Western Europe, Central Europe, Latin America and soon also in Central Asia. They can be reached via the internet, where there is efficient protection against viruses.
We wish you all a peaceful Advent season. If you get bored because of closed leisure and cultural institutions, think of your CAcert community. Am heutigen dritten Adventssonntag stellen wir euch den neuen Support vor. Im Moment sind daran, den Support deutlich auszubauen. Zur Zeit werden neue Freiwillige eingearbeitet und helfen mit, dass Anfragen schneller bearbeitet werden können. In Köln nennt man sie Heinzelmännchen, in Schweden heisst er Tomte – egal wie Sie diese Leute nennen wollen, die Ihnen in ihrer Freizeit bei CAcert weiterhelfen, sie sitzen in Westeuropa, Mitteleuropa, Lateinamerika und demnächst auch in Zentralasien. Erreichbar sind sie übers Internet, wo gegen Viren effizienter Schutz besteht.
Wir wünschen allen eine geruhsame Adventszeit. Sollten Ihnen wegen geschlossener Freizeit- und Kulturinstitutionen langweilig werden, denken Sie doch an Ihre CAcert-Gemeinschaft.
